YOU BROUGHT THIS ON YOURSELF

This got even funnier when I realized that to shoot it, essentially someone had to hurl a massive rat puppet at Cary Elwes.

My favorite thing is that he doesn’t telegraph it at all. He never tenses up, never flinches, just waits for the giant rat puppet being hurled through the air to take him down. Great performance.

Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman-Hughes, 1972 and 2014

Both by Dan Bagan

Wanna see my cry like a baby? Ask me who these women were.

Hughes’ father was beaten nearly to death by the KKK when she was a kid, and what does she do? Become an activist to try and stop that from happening to other people. She raised money to bail civil rights protesters out of jail. She helped women get out of abusive situations by providing shelter for them until they got on their feet. She founded an agency that helped women get to work without having to leave their children alone, because childcare in the 1970s? Not really a thing. In fact, a famous feminist line in the 70s was “every housewife is one man away from welfare.”

Then she teamed up with Steinman to found the Women’s Action Alliance, which created the first battered women’s shelters in history. They attacked women’s rights issues through boots on the ground activism, problem solving, and communication. They stomped over barriers of race and class to meet women where they were: mostly mothers who wanted better for themselves and their children.

These are women are who I always wanted to be.

"The hyper-sexualization of little girls and their bodies, as a mother, really bothers me. It plays into the sexualization of their bodies into their teenager years and adult life. It makes them grow up faster than they need to. Let them be little girls, have fun, be able to play in the playground and not worry about going on the monkey bars because someone’s going to see their underwear. Something like this constricts their movements, which affects the way they play."Jenny Reid, a volunteer firefighter with Langford Fire Rescue, says the costume is not only offensive to women in her field, it’s also damaging to the self-esteem of little girls.
"That costume is awful and it sends the wrong message," she says. "It reinforces that there are still jobs that are off-limits to women. It’s not a representation of the real job. Little girls can do whatever they want. They shouldn’t be restricted. Those types of costumes put so many limitations on them. They don’t build the self-esteem and confidence you need to be a firefighter or police officer." " [x]

I work at a halloween store and have been pointing this out to coworkers, as well as getting into discussions with moms and dads about this all year (really, for the past four years, but it has actually gotten worse).
We did a count and we only had two little girls costumes that weren’t a dress/skirt.  Costumes like pikachu, cat, cop, firefighter, powerranger ALL are turned into little dresses that barely look anything like they are supposed to.
It is sad and scary. Make your own costume.

So in light of all the stuff going on in my life, I haven’t been able to post about my newest lil’ guy.

Everyone, meet Peeps! (His full name is Perseus Pancake, but it’s easier to just call him Peeps.)  He’s a yellow Nigerian uromastyx, about a year and a half old, and he was my birthday present to myself!  Ever since visiting Caitlin and spending time with her two lovely lizards, I fell in love and desperately wanted one for myself.

He was very skinny and skittish when we got him last Sunday, but he’s starting to eat more and plump up, as well as becoming more active and tolerant of my handling.  Expect lots of stories about him and pics as well!  I’ll be using #peepspls for everything involving him, so blacklist it if you’re squeamish about lizards.
